Science

Through our Science curriculum we want to develop in all young people a lifelong curiosity and interest in the sciences. Over time, the development of Science has changed our lives and the world in which we live – and is vital to the prosperity of our world’s future.
At Weston Lullingfields Primary School, we strive to teach our pupils the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of Science, whilst promoting its significant place in our world.
Our aim is that children will know more, understand more and be able to explain more. We want children to feel confident in their science knowledge and enquiry skills, to be excited about science, to show that they are actively curious to learn more and will see the relevance of what they learn in science lessons to real-life situations and also the importance of science in the real world.
Our Science lessons cultivate a positive attitude toward the subject and provide pupils with many opportunities to experience the excitement and prospects of working as a scientist, with a hope that a passion for the subject will be sparked and nurtured. We hope that our curriculum will lead to future scientists who can inspire and drive forthcoming developments and innovations that will continue to shape the world around us for generations to come.
Through our curriculum our children develop their understanding of the biological, physical and chemical processes, and methods of science through different types of enquiry that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. As children progress through the year groups, they build on their skills in working scientifically, as well as on their scientific knowledge, as they develop greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer a range of scientific questions. Our scheme of work, which draws on a range of sources to engage our children, ensures that children have a varied, progressive and well mapped-out science curriculum that provides the opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the science national curriculum for KS1 and KS2.
We aim to equip our young people with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today, and for the future. In doing this, we hope to inspire our children to recognise that Science can lead to prosperity, not only for our planet, but for them personally, in a range of different careers such as: medicine, animal conservation and welfare, climate control and environmental science.
